Frequently asked questions
It all began with a simple idea fueled by a deep passion. As a small business, we pride ourselves on personal attention and dedication to every detail. Our approach is rooted in quality and integrity, ensuring that everything we do reflects our commitment to excellence.
What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a ground-based martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling, joint locks, and chokeholds. Unlike striking arts such as karate or boxing, BJJ is almost entirely focused on controlling and submitting an opponent once the fight reaches the ground — which, in most real-world confrontations, is exactly where it ends up.
BJJ's founding principle is that a smaller, weaker person can successfully control and submit a much larger opponent by using superior technique, leverage, and positional strategy. It forms the backbone of modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and is widely regarded as the most effective ground-fighting system ever developed.
Is BJJ suitable for complete beginners with no martial arts background?
Absolutely — and the majority of people who start BJJ have no prior experience at all. At BJJ Success USA, our adult programme is built from the ground up for beginners. You will never be thrown in at the deep end or left to figure things out alone.
Our curriculum is structured so that each class builds logically on the last. You always know what you're learning, why it works, and how it connects to everything else. From your very first trial class, you are treated as a student on a long-term journey — not someone who needs to be tested.
Can I start BJJ if I am over 40?
Not only can you — in many ways, BJJ suits people over 40 better than almost any other martial art. Because BJJ relies on technique and leverage rather than speed and strength, older beginners often catch up to younger athletes faster than they expect.
Steven Cowan began BJJ at 29 and competed at black belt well into his fifties — including after major abdominal surgery. His book Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Over 40 is a comprehensive guide to training smarter at any age, covering injury prevention, recovery, mindset, and technique adjustments.
We also offer dedicated private sessions specifically for over-40 beginners in Norwich — a calm, unhurried introduction to BJJ with no class pressure and full individual attention.
Is BJJ good for children? What age can they start?
BJJ is exceptional for children's development — but only when it's taught by instructors who understand how children actually learn and grow. At BJJ Success USA, our kids programme goes far beyond teaching techniques.
We are the only official SKILLZ school in Norfolk, and Steven is the UK's only Paediatric Master Specialist. Our curriculum is built on verified child development science, addressing children physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Every session is designed to build confidence, focus, discipline, self-regulation, and the ability to deal with setbacks — skills that transfer into every area of life.
Children can typically begin from around 4 years old, depending on the programme.
How long does it take to earn a black belt in BJJ?
A BJJ black belt typically takes between 10 and 15 years of consistent training — making it one of the hardest black belts to earn in any martial art. The belt progression runs: white → blue → purple → brown → black, and each belt represents a significant jump in technical skill and time on the mat.
This is not a negative — it's part of what makes BJJ so rewarding. The journey itself is the point. Many practitioners find that the belt is almost irrelevant compared to the confidence, fitness, problem-solving ability, and friendships that BJJ brings along the way.
What should I wear to my first BJJ class?
For your first free trial class, comfortable athletic clothing is completely fine — joggers, a t-shirt, and bare feet. You do not need to buy a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform) before trying the class. Once you decide to join, your instructor will advise you on what to get based on your specific goals and which programme suits you.
How is BJJ different from karate, judo, or other martial arts?
Karate is primarily a striking art focused on punches and kicks. It has virtually no ground fighting component.
Judo is a throwing art. It includes some ground work but most competition and training focuses on securing a throw rather than the ground fight that follows.
BJJ starts where judo ends. Once a person is taken down, BJJ provides the most comprehensive and sophisticated system for controlling, escaping, and submitting an opponent on the ground. It is sometimes called "human chess" due to its strategic depth — every position has multiple attacks, defences, and transitions.
In realistic self-defence situations, the majority of physical altercations end up on the ground. BJJ's focus on exactly that environment is why it has been shown repeatedly to be among the most practically effective martial arts in the world.
Is BJJ safe? Will I get injured?
Like any physical activity, BJJ carries some risk of injury — but at a well-run academy, those risks are carefully managed. At BJJ Success USA, we have a 20-year track record of teaching students across all ages and physical conditions in a safe, structured environment.
New students are always partnered carefully. We have a strong culture of tapping (submitting) early rather than risking injury. And Steven's own experience training through and after major surgery means injury prevention and smart recovery are built into everything we teach.
